Over the last 15 years, Zesco United, Zanaco FC, Power Dynamos, and Nkana FC have developed some sort of dominance over the rest of the Zambian Super League. The only time a team outside this big 4 won the league was when Red Arrows triumphed in 2004, only to put up a disastrous showing at the 2005 CAF African Champions League.

Since 2013, Zesco United, Zanaco, and Power Dynamos have always made it into the top 4. The league table gives a very clear picture of how far behind other clubs are. Zesco United, Zanaco, Power Dynamos and Nkana always score at least 30 goals a season, a feat most other clubs struggle to achieve.

Green Buffaloes have always been up there among the top 6 but with club licensing underway, most service clubs will not survive. There used to be many service clubs in European Leagues but once football clubs became profesional they disapeared. The only way for both Red Arrows or Green Buffaloes to survive is to develop good academies.

Both clubs already get promising youngsters from academies, but it may not work for much longer given that the Zambian Super League is becoming more and more competitive to a point where throwing in too many youngsters at once will become suicidal.

A reserve league will be the solution to such a problem and will provide clubs like Green Buffaloes and Red Arrows with opportunities to develop their youngsters. Unless the service sides adapt to the needs of club licensing, they will disappear like most European and other African service sides did, and it will not be long until they become the next Aston Villa, Newcastle United, or Leeds United.
